Seo Mu-Sang is introduced as a member of the Third Mercenary Group dispatched by the Central Heavenly Alliance to keep guard over Jin Mu-Won and served as its Vice Captain and Second in command. He was also the chief strategist of the group. Unlike his superior, Jang Pae-San, Seo Mu-Sang is diligent in his duties and acts as the more rational of the two while simultaneously curbing much of Jang's attempts to inflict cruelty upon Mu-Won.
Following the attacking on the Northern Heavenly Sect by a mysterious group, Seo swore allegiance to Mu-Won after recognizing his hidden talents and vowed to do everything in his power to help aid him in resurrecting the Northern Heavenly Sect while protecting him from the shadows. After many years of trials and tribulations, Seo has successfully embedded himself within the Central Heavenly Alliance and is the head of of its special investigative unit, the Department of Pursuit and Capture.

Seo Mu-Sang used to have a girlfriend that he cherished and loved but his girlfriend seemingly betrayed him and decided to marry Yeop-Wol, a man Mu-Sang considered a friend. This left him feeling rage and resentment towards Yeop-Wol and Mu-Sang believed that she had not left him off her own will.
